The SS version of the story is that French partisans had massacred German prisoners and a medical unit as well as telling the SS commander that they had captured his friend and were going to burn him alive in Oradour-sur-Vayres. The SS commander went crazy with rage and a mistake in looking at a map led to him going to Oradour-sur-Glane for revenge. He could not find any partisans so took revenge against the only "enemy" he could find, the civilians.
The only preserved ruin in Russia I have seen is a mill in Stalingrad. Everything else of the 70,000 destroyed towns and villages in Russia and the Ukraine in WW2 was rebuilt.
We were advised that we didn’t need the audio guide when we entered the exhibition as the displays had English translations . However we realised after it would have been useful as the 12 minute film had very limited English subtitles.
I hear the Nazis attempted to hide this crime but the truth came out and the French Government made this murdered village a time capsule so people can see what happened here.
Sadly it still happens in parts of the world today.
