HOSTEL EL MUSEO

Nice atmosphere, people are very convenient, we were able to leave our car in their parking lot for our day's visit to San José.
More than affordable price, only traffic noise in the morning and cold shower! Be aware
The host meant well but was somewhat strange in his manner. On arrival I was a bit confused as he wasn't very welcoming, and wasn't much help when I asked whether he could give me any help in booking visits to nearby national parks (navigating the website to do this and book bus transport is quite tricky, so I was hoping that someone with local knowledge might be able to assist).
Later on in my stay he was more polite so I don't think he was being deliberately rude when i arrived, but it still came across like this.
It is very quiet, and there isn't much of a social atmosphere - so I would go somewhere else if you are looking to meet other travellers when you are away. The lights are completely switched off at 10pm.
I stayed in a private room with an ensuite. The room had a musty, unfresh atmosphere and there was a strong smell of drains from the bathroom (this put me off my food when I tried to eat in there one night). It felt very used and worn. The bed was, however, very comfortable and I had a good nights sleep every night.
It did feel very safe and the breakfast of pancakes and coffee was a highlight.
In terms of location, it is a 30-40 min walk to get to the centre of the city and main bus stations. This is navigable but everyday I had to walk 40 mins to and from from the centre/bus stations, so if you would prefer less walking then I'd suggest staying somewhere closer to the centre or on the western side of the city.
