DOWNTOWN L.A. PROPER HOTEL

While we were driving to the hotel, I received an email stating that our reservation at Cara Cara that night had been cancelled due to inclement weather. After checking in, we stopped by the restaurant to inquire about the situation; however, the host had no idea what we were talking about. He literally had to take a photo of my cancellation email to text it to another coworker, who ended up being as equally confused as he was. Turns out the restaurant was in fact not closing early, so no harm no foul. However, the lack of coordination and miscommunication from the staff was slightly concerning; little did we know it was a premonition of things to come. For example, later that night, we had to make multiple, repeated calls to the front desk for them to bring us ice to our room. Again, not the biggest deal, but bear with me.
On the second day, we left our water bottles outside our rooms for them to be refilled/replaced (as instructed by the valet who helped take our bags to our room the day prior), but never received any replacements. We then had to make an additional call for more water. Another slight annoyance was housekeeping’s continued knocks at the door, even though we told them we wouldn’t need turn-down service (they must have come to the door knocking at least 3 times). A little later that afternoon, we ordered Uber Eats, and what should have been a simple drop off to our door became anything but. The front desk ended up intercepting our food from the delivery driver and calling our room to ask if they should take it to our door, to which we accepted. We waited about 15 minutes, took a look outside our door, but the food wasn’t there. It took us another additional call to the front desk before the food finally got delivered to us. That night, I was getting so fed up with calling the front desk that I ended up searching for an ice machine, but couldn’t find one. Back to the front desk I went.
On our third and final day, we checked out and left our bags with the front desk in order to walk to a brunch spot nearby. While we were at brunch, they tried putting our luggage in my car, but since I left my car in valet mode (which locks the trunk), they were unable to put it inside the trunk. When we got back to the valet we discovered that instead of leaving our luggage at the front desk they ended up stuffing everything into the back seat, scuffing, marring, and dirtying the white leather interior of my car. This ended up being the final straw for me and really pissed me off, because now I ended up having to spend time cleaning the back seat with my partner when this whole situation could have been prevented. To add insult to injury, some parts of the leather were actually scratched and we were unable to remove them after trying to wipe it down.
To sum it up, nearly our entire experience at this establishment left us feeling like we wished we could just do everything ourselves. I’m not sure if the issue comes down to a lack of training/critical thinking skills, or if the staff is just absent minded/doesn’t truly care, but each and any of the seemingly simple things that we needed throughout our trip felt so unnecessarily complicated and such a struggle honestly. Every single little thing just ended up being harder than it needed to be. This place is such a bad value, especially for the egregious prices they charge. To Proper Hotel - you’re a five-star establishment, do better.
We most definitely won’t be back.
