Exceptionnel au cœur du vignoble. Un chef de cuisine digne des plus grands et des propriétaires aux petits soins.

We arrived bang in the middle of the surrounding Christmas Market season (Kaysersberg, Colmar...) and although picture pretty and decked out for Christmas, peace and tranquility reigned, which was a blessed relief after 11 hours in the car. A warm and convivial atmosphere permeates every part of the Hostellerie Schwendi. Expertly run by the characterful Rene complete with Fedora hat (not a central casting red chequered table cloth or onion in sight) and a wonderful team with great local wine knowledge (they have their own wine and the white Edelzwicker and red Pinit Gris a highlight - from Schille-Gisie), we had a memorable dinner in their buzzing basement restaurant. There wasn't a free table in the house... impressive for a Monday night. The menu was peppered with Alsatian specialities... all well presented, very tasty and reasonably priced. If anything, the portions were a little on the large side. Our dog was welcome in the room and in the restaurant and she loved the attention. The bedroom was perfectly appointed and equipped... Good strong shower and magnifying mirror (a necessity for all women over [and under] 50 ????. An early morning frosty walk round the ramparts at the base of a hillside of vineyards to the accompaniment of a rising sun of orange, red, yellow and pink hues was a delight to me and the dog. We will definitely go back and this is a welcome alternative route to the Alps from Blighty especially if you stay a couple of nights and brave those picture pretty Christmas markets (think the castle in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on speed ????). We left armed with a case of Pinot Gris, very happy campers.

The food was excellent as well as the service. We had lunch and arrived there without any reservations on a Sunday. It was Christmas markets in Kaysersberg, and everything was full. It was a great surprise ! Food, service, and place are of excellent quality. The restaurant is using an old seller from the vineyards. The restaurant as well as the hotel are owned by a family from the region that have had this business for many generations. I highly recommend this place !
