This important (and free) museum is a product of Mauritius' 2009 Truth and Justice Commission that investigated the impacts of slavery and indentured servitude. While still under development, the museum is nonetheless worth a visit. Most exhibits are in French and Kreol. I read negative comments about this from entitled visitors, so feel free to use Google Translate's photo tool as necessary ????.

Still lack some information on slaves. I thought that we would see the sufferings of slaves through representations but that was not the case.

Ici vous trouverez le seul et l'unique pot kassé de toute l'histoire Mauricienne, cest poignant...

Ps: Le musée contribue grandement à l'histoire de l'île c'est un incontournable!

It's a very gorgeous place. As soon as you enter the yard itself, you can feel that the atmosphere is different... as if you're stepping into another era. Those who are true History lovers will understand what I mean.

I was lucky enough to attend the opening of the Intercontinental Slavery Museum and launching of the Preview Exhibition.

A lot of effort has gone into the mounting of this Museum and there's much more to come.

Absolutely worth visiting!

I read many reviews on this museum with many saying they walked out because the entire presentation is in French and so could not understand. Whilst i dont speak French i decided to go anyway as i was interested in the conservation of the Old Military Hospital. The restoration work has been beautifully done and there is a video in English showing the process albeit the audio is not the best. They have only been open 2/3 months and the rest of the display boards are in the process of being translated into English and this will make it so much easier for tourists to understand the history of slavery not only on the island but world over. It has been beautifully put together and once the rest of the Hospital restored into a shop and coffee shop it will definitely be worth a return trip for me and worth a visit by International tourists interested in history and the restoration of old buildings.
At the moment it is free and as it is aimed at local residents i am sure it will remain this way.
The only reason for 3 stars is not being able to understand the presentation at the moment.

Very disappointing visit as all the information is in French. You saw many tourists just walking in and walking out as they couldn't understand the information

This museum is still in development but it has already got a lot about Mauritian history. Entrance was free at the time. It's fascinating how to hear actual reconstructed voices & songs from the past, how they came to be in Mauritius. Thank you very much for bringing light to our darkness and kept up the good work!

Excellent accueil !
Bravo !

The Intercontinental Slavery Museum is set in a stunning colonial building, known as the ex-Military Hospital, right next to Aapravasi Ghat. ????

This museum offers a powerful and profound glimpse into the lives of enslaved people. The exhibits vividly portray their living conditions. Beyond the tragic misery they faced, the museum also sheds light on their bravery and strengths through real-life stories. An exhibit of interest is a unique collection of pictures of busts molded from the faces of former enslaved people from 1846, which adds a unique sense of immersion allowing visitors to see the faces of those who endured such hardships, along with their names and age. It's a thought-provoking and educational experience that I highly recommend. Don't miss out on this important piece of history, revisited with a focus on identities and lifestyles, away from the mere diminished status of slaves !

Museum access is free ????️

One downside is that some exhibits appear unfinished, and offer poor visual and at times uncomfortable physical experience. The audio exhibits too can be improved.

Never knew the site of the military hospital is found in the buffer zone of the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site and is now the placement of the intercontinental Slavery Museum. This museum shows clearly it's role and responsibility to educate, valorise, preserve, promote, healing and reconcile Mauritians with their identity "Slavery should not be a taboo subject because it concerns everyone". If you're searching for a history place to visit in Mauritius, I fully recommend visiting this museum

It's nice to finally have an official slavery museum which will open next year. The military hospital is converted as a museum and the great thing is it's free.Next to Aapravasi Ghat.I would recommend to visit this site first to follow the history accordingly...French period with the history of slavery and then the British period with the indian immigrants.

There is an exposition till 23rd sep and it's free.If you are keen for knowledge and history..it's the place to be.

Really good museum!
You can learn a lot and understand the history of Mauritius a bit more. Even a private tour for free is possible.

Great place to learn more about the history of Mauritius and also the role slavery played… very friendly and knowledgeable staff - we even got a free 1:1 tour by the staff which was very individual and insightful. Fully recommend!
