This place sucks. The location is great and the rooms were pretty clean, but the construction started at 7 am and it was so much more obnoxious than you could imagine. I paid a month's rent to stay here for four days, only to not be able to sleep. The shared bathrooms are fairly clean, but they are designed to have VERY little privacy and slippers to avoid touching the shower floor were not provided. Definitely not coming back.

The room looks like a train compartment. The room, although small, is very cozy. The only thing is that the windows do not open and when you sleep, the room becomes very stuffy.

Do not, I repeat DO NOT stay there until the construction is finished. It was loud, smelled like sewage at times, and they are basically drilling into the walls at 8am right when you want to sleep. Do yourself a huge favour and avoid this hotel until all construction is complete. Your trip and stay will be ruined a guarantee that

Under major renovation. Dusty and dirty. Best to avoid for the foreseeable future.

UPDATE It's changed!

The once fabulous lobby has gone, you enter via a whole lot of workmen, and there is even a shaft open just with a sign!
A few people with tattered clothing wander the passages, and one was continually knocking on my door, scary.
It had to happen I guess, but very sad

Apart from the fabulous location, this hotel is one you hope will never change
It's quirky, somewhat different, with friendly staff and fellow guests. Stay strange.

Not happy with my experience. Got to the hotel and it was covered in scaffolding and there were all kinds of construction workers carrying wood and tools around. When we eventually found the entrance (in the basement,) the walls were bare and plastic wrapping was covering most of the floor. We dropped off our bags and checked in later, where we were guided up the elevator with 5 or 6 other construction workers making their way up. We got to our floor and it reeked, likely due to the sheetrock and materials being used, etc. The hallways were dirty and narrow and we got to our tiny room (which we expected) but there was little to no storage or walking place for two people. The bathrooms were shared, which wasn't much of a problem. I typically wouldn't mind any of it if the cost wasn't so high. We stayed at this hotel expecting the beautiful architecture that was advertised, but were greatly disappointed. I wouldn't even pay half the cost it was for what we got. Location was alright, pretty close to everything. Service was alright too, I could see that the staff were trying to do their best but they were given nothing. I checked out after one night, planned for 4. I don't reccomend coming here within the next few months, I hope its better by summer because I won't return again for a while.

I'm reluctantly giving two stars instead of one because the hotel is cheap and the location is quite good. I went into this hotel aware than the rooms were small, so I am not deducting any points for that. But I was not alerted that the hotel is under major renovation as of March 2024, and there is paint and dust everywhere in addition to the incessant noise of construction workers and power tools. The entrance has actually been moved to the basement. Also, there were brown stains on my bedsheets... overall a pretty abysmal experience. My advice is to just pay a bit more and stay at a "normal" hotel.

Avoid at all costs. The hallway reeks of urine, construction (with power tools) began prior to 8am both Friday and Saturday mornings that I stayed here, you have to walk through several flights of electrical wires spliced into open outlets to get to the rooms, two showers are shared amongst the entire floor, plus there are literally zero amenities or common spaces.
Oh and there were junior high aged kids setting off alarms in the construction zone Friday night.

I’ve been staying at the Jane for many years as it was quaint, full of history and affordable for a solo traveller. I usually recommend this to friends. But I warn you, DO NOT STAY HERE!! 90 percent of the hotel is under construction and I was actually shocked they were charging regular prices and aren’t more detailed about the construction on their website.
Construction workers started at 7am and were constantly working in the stairwell making it very unsafe for guests. The signage was not clear and you never really knew where you were suppose to walk. I ended up in construction areas by accident trying to find my way.
I don’t know how this is even legal!!! I felt very unsafe passing workers with huge boards and passing scaffolding in the stairwells. Plus all the dust that is everywhere. I’m not sure what I actually breathed during my stay!
This will be my last time staying at the Jane!!
It’s such a shame as the location is perfect!!

So the story goes something like that The Jane is slowly closing; they're renovating to be some new building for rich people, and while they do that they still operate. There is a lot of construction going on. I never heard any of it from my room. The room itself was reeeeally small but I was ok with it after some initial shock. I just ended up living out of the small bed. Reminded me of dorm life. The shared bathrooms always smelled like pee, which was annoying, but generally were clean enough to use. The staff were always nice. Construction workers were always nice. The fellow guests at the hotel were either old people, drunk overnighters and we had one crazy guy have the cops escort him to the hospital one night. All things considered it's about what I expected; still I can't help but think about what this place used to be and so 3 is fair I think.

The location of this place is fine. It's the staff that don't tell you how to get out once you've checked in or the fact that it's nonrefundable and they wait until you've paid to tell you about the messy and confusing construction. I didn't feel safe, there were no directions on how to get out and if you went missing in that building, no one would know until they traced your debit card. Would not recommend.

Feel this hotel! Major work throughoutthe building = noise + dust + website fake pictures. Price really much too high and no comman parts available. Worst hotel expérience. A shame

I've been wanting to stay at the Jane for years, but finally ended up doing it during a weekend trip for a friend's birthday. I'd read a review earlier last year about renovations, and their website does have a(n easy to miss) banner at the top saying that it's under construction, but the actual scope of the construction is not described at all. Basically 90% of the interior is gutted, exposed and there is work being done EVERYWHERE.

The entrance was extremely hard to find; the actual lobby entrance is under construction and has a sign with an arrow and street number pointing to the right, but the temporary current entrance is in the basement, which is also mostly under renovation. I actually don't know if it's legal to host guests with this level of construction this close places guests are exposed.

The elevator wasn't working when I arrived, so I had to carry my bags up many flights of stairs and squeeze by construction workers who were actively working, peeling the wallpaper off walls, working on wiring, and everything in between. During my stay I was actually worried about the amount of plaster and probably asbestos I was inhaling. The elevator didn't work until late that night, so I had to go up and down the stairs while the crews were working a few times.

Aside from the construction, the staff was pretty nice and polite, but I didn't really interact with anyone outside of checking in and out. The payment process was a bit strange and a little sketchy, and I was asked to sign a waiver stating that a temporary hold of $50 a day would be put on my card in case of incidentals, and that the hotel is not responsible for the theft or damage of any items not kept in the provided safe. May be a standard thing, but seemed a bit strange to me.

I knew the size and quality of the room going in, and that was part of the charm, but the beds were very uncomfortable (you can feel the springs) and the sheets and blanket were very old, and a bit worn and stained. The walls are very thin and my neighbors were loud. Anytime someone was checking in or would stop to talk in the hall it was very loud and, with the construction, taking a nap or relaxing during the day is out of the question. The ballroom, bar, and rooftop are all under construction, so I wasn't able to see anything but my room and the bathroom. The room hallways were dim and dingy, and kind of creepy to be honest, with an old mothball/cigarette kind of smell. It looks like there are some older long-term guests/residents, and many loud young guests, and overall was more of a slightly more private hostel experience.

I'm not too upset, because it was so cheap and did the job, but it was a bit creepy, and I'm worried about the possible amount of asbestos I've inhaled. I was worried about my belongings after the waiver and seeing the condition of the place, but thankfully nothing was tampered with and I wasn't charged for any surprise incidentals. I'd love to try again once the construction is done and hopefully edit this review or make a new/better one, but my hopes aren't super high on this one.

Not sure I'd stay again, it smelled like cigarettes and literal death. They somehow had 2 rooms booked for me when I only booked one and that's what my confirmation showed but they did not charge me for thankfully. They don't respond to e-mails. The club is very loud at night and its awkward to walk through people attending lavish events every night just trying to get to your hotel room.

The location of the Jane Hotel is great and it's a very reasonably priced hotel for the area. I loved being near the Whitney and the Highline and being in the village. When staying at the Jane Hotel there was construction going on. It didn't really impact the experience overall. We stayed in one of the double rooms with a bunk bed and shared bathroom. As others have said, the bathroom was clean and the rooms were quiet. So it served it's purpose as offering a place to sleep in an amazing neighborhood.

I actually stayed some years ago but I really loved it here and will definitely return when back in NYC. It was very unique, charming and comfortable with a lovely cafe to have breakfast. I had heard some ghost stories and have to admit I think it’s haunted though I won’t go into why on here. Supposedly ghosts of Titanic personnel who escaped the sinking and stayed here after it happened still live here. Experience for yourself ! Very close to some lovely river walks where you can take pictures of the Statue of Liberty ????.

This place is a knock out! Hotels in the surrounding area are often much pricier. It may have a bit of "charm" that comes when refurbs aren't as often as the chain hotels, but on each occasion I have stayed at the Jane Hotel, I have had a room that met and exceeded my expectations for cleanliness, quality, comfort, and amenities. Additionally, I find the lobby incredibly fun (there are monkeys everywhere!) The staff--- in matching red bellmans outfits remnicent of the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles and the (now defunct) Tower of Terror at Disney's Studios in Orlando--- checks you in to your room in front of an old style bulleton board / mail board. This hotel is among my most recommended for a traveler on a budget in New York City.

I went here to celebrate my best friend's birthday in November and she was physically assaulted by two ladies. When I say physically assaulted, I mean it. She was hit in the head with a glass bottle and her forehead was cut open. Security saw her bleeding and instead of trying to help her, they escorted her to a private office behind the lobby so she wouldn't be seen by any one who was already there partying. I was appalled at how little the Jane staff did and how they responded to the situation. They just stood there and did nothing. After I took my friend to the hospital, we reported the incident and shared the blurry video we have of the girls running away. My friend did not do anything to provoke them, we were just dancing and minding our own business in the corner by the fireplace. I'm not sure if the girls were aiming to hit someone else and my friend got in the way but it was a horrible night. To top it off, nothing was done by security or staff at hotel and they TOLD US NOT TO CALL THE POLICE. They had our numbers and didn't even try to check up on my friend any time after. When I tried to follow up with them, the Jane Hotel stopped responding to my phone calls and emails. I then threatened to call the police, and they responded ONLY THEN to tell me the time to report the incident to the police HAD PASSED. This place is A DISGRACE. Please do not support this atrocious place.

Beautiful and historic landmark hotel w/ plenty of (former) reasonable priced rooms, a superb ballroom, good café and amazing views at its rooftop (all of them now members-only). Staff was good, special mentions to Jamie and José. You (presumably) still can have better deals if a frequent traveler. Nearby you'll find West Village speakeasy, the Highline, the Hudson Yards and the cyclable Hudson riverside. Now the downsides: you'll have to pay city tax and it can turn your stay expensive (even if it's one of Manhattan's most affordable), the rooms are extremely small, you'll have almost no amenity beside a bed for what you pay, the nearby subway stations is far away, the place is now under renovations and a lot of areas are closed and will be keep closed afterwards and the place used to get crowded during weekend's nights when the ballroom turn into a discotheque.

Worst hotel experience in NYC by far. First, I booked a 3 night stay and they never disclosed they were doing a full renovation in the building, closing most (if not all) the public areas including the bar and the rooftop. Second, I knew that the rooms were tiny, but in my room the AC was broken and the heating system was on 90% of the time, so my room was literally a boiler. I request a room change but there didn’t want to even having some free rooms in my floor. Also the fire alarm sounded 3 times during my stay, probably because of the construction stuff. Last, when I asked for a compensation for all these problems above, they just said the reservation was not refundable. Make yourself a favor and stay away from this people.
