Just got back from six nights at the Sumner. The room was large and had nice amenities with plenty of outlets, a comfortable bed, and nice towels. The walls are paper thin and the street noise woke me up a few times. So I would suggest ear plugs for light sleepers. I was at the top of the building in 109, so the broken elevator was tough after a long day of walking, and coming back with bags and packages, ect... the neighborhood is great with two pubs within 100 yards and lots of cafes and restaurants nearby. The Marble Arch tube station is a 6-7 minute walk with plenty of places to grab a coffee to start your day.

Lovely hotel, calming, comfortable and chic. The chap on the desk is utterly charming and very helpful. My room was in the basement...a beautifully decorated spacious room. The only negative was the noise from the water pipes which is weirdly noisy and woke me up a few times in alarm.

The Sumner has certainly changed since our previous stay before Covid. Firstly, I'd like to say the staff were excellent, friendly and helpful. They took our heavy bags upstairs and down again when we left as the lift is out of service. We noticed that the hotel is in need of an urgent update, even the free to air TV channels don't work. Netflix needs your own login. We were looking forward to the afternoon teas in the lounge as we have experienced previously but it has been discontinued. All in all, we think it is overpriced for what it is.

When we arrived the lift was broken and our room was on the top floor. They carried up our bags for us so that wasn't a problem. But my husband has plantar fasciitis and every step counts. He wanted to be able to walk around London without pain. The extremely helpful front desk staff person, Moji, got us a room on the first floor for the rest of our stay. Not only was he helpful, but his manner was so gracious and his smile was so warm every time he greeted us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will stay there again the next time we come to London.

Do NOT book this hotel until you have verified that they have fixed the lift! The lift broke apparently a long time ago & the Sumner did not notify me (I booked the September reservation in end May of this year 2023). We were moved from a lovely front facing room (on the 4th floor into a basement room with below street windows. We had to keep the drapes closed at all times to prevent people from peeping in. I left word with the front desk to have the manager contact me about a reduction in the overall cost of the stay, due to the relocation of our room, plus the moldy bathroom tub mat, no free standing show in that basement room - our room was to have had one. You had to climb into a deep tub to grab the portable shower cord. Hotel has ignored my follow up emails, not good or professional on their part. They should have owned up to this reduction in use and service to us. Loss of a beautiful room that was booked 4 months in advance.

Decent hotel and friendly staff but stayed in a dated, dusty room with zero sound insulation.

The Sumner has not retained any of its former glory – although remnants are noticeable. I see it is still billing itself as a 4-star hotel, and I could see why that might have been once-upon-a-time. But not now. It is fading, and fading quickly. It’s a 2-star level place now. Kind of like a cheap Motel 6. The water from the shower came out hot and then cold, but not mixed. And if you showered at the same time as anyone in any other room, it just trickled out. It’s still clean, but not pristine. I mean, adequately clean – I would not criticize it for that alone. My assessment is that they just did not have the funds to weather the pandemic, and that pushed them over the brink. Nothing is updated. The downstairs study/library and entrance are still really nice. But the rest has aged. The pillows were old, thin, flat, and hard. The bedding and beds were fine, but old and not high quality. The temp control in this room was not as nice as other hotels we stayed at – it managed, but lots of swirling air that felt breezy.
But here’s where it all fell apart and the main reason for my complaint – no elevators. We were on the 5th floor (58 steps up). Not nice, open, wide stairways. But a narrow, winding staircase with steep steps. It took me 10 minutes every time to get up to the room, and I had to stop twice each time (I'm older, but even in my younger days, that amount of stair-climbing would have been irritating). They have 2 elevators, but neither was operational. And from how the staff talked, it sounded like they are not going to be back in service any time soon. I had the distinct impression they could not afford the semi-annual inspection. I begged for a room on a lower floor, but they said they did not have one. If we had planned to stay any longer, I would have gone somewhere else. You could see the hints of what it once was, but I really think the pandemic brought them to their knees. If I were in the hotel business, this would be a prime opportunity to buy and fix up, because all the potential is still there. But in the meantime….I would not recommend staying here.

The hotel itself was pretty good for your standard middle of London small hotel in an old building. Creaky floors and cramped spaces. But the staff did well, the location was great, and our room was very quiet and clean. The only thing that really bothered us was the saggy mattresses. They need to be updated yesterday. We stuffed pillows underneath the middle of the bed to bolster it. Our backs were really unhappy after a couple of nights, and we are not large people.

BUT: old bedrooms with old furniture, TV unusable, partly broken blind (there may be other rooms of better quality or renovated but I didn't know); no iron and ironing board in bedroom and the one kindly provided was quite old and damaged; also poor/limited breakfast room which is located in the basement.
