We decided to split an appetizer and a main. To start, we had the beet and chevre "cheesecake." This was goat cheese whipped up with some beets or beet juice and served with more beets and topped with a crumble. The dish was inspired. The tangy goat cheese needed something to balance it and the beets performed admirably. Plus, it was larger than a couple of bites, so it was a perfect dish to share before the entrée.
We had the coq au vin for our main. So good! We've had this dish many times in restaurants over the years and have made it ourselves too, but this was the best version we've ever had. The sauce was not too thick, very very rich, and slightly sweet, maybe including some Marsala wine? The chicken literally fell off the bones, to the point we could eat 100% of the meat and not leave anything on the plate. Carrots, turnips, and creamy potatoes completed the dish. Outstanding.
This is not fussy food administered in multiple micro-courses. It's hearty, simple, yet delicately flavored. We enjoyed ourselves a lot at the Black Sheep and we'll be back again next time we're in town.
Highly recommended.
We will not return. Too bad because it should have been better.
Note: prices have gone up. Tasting menu was $65 just a few months ago. Now $72 (still worth it).
Also they charge a credit card fee that was a surprise at the end of the meal. I would have felt better about it, if they had mentioned the fee somewhere on the menu (at the start of our delicious meal).
We had a reservation, yet experienced lengthy wait times to be seated, to order, and for our food to come.
Staff said that rain impacted their seating and kitchen orders, which I totally understand. However, rain has been forecasted for many days, given one of the biggest storms is on the horizon.
Staff seemed ill prepared to deal with what was very expected weather.
We especially loved the crudo, and the salad was so yummy!!!
The food was truly delicious, but the tasting menu portions were on the smaller side for our liking. We went for Thanksgiving, and they gave us only two slices of turkey for four people to share. Overall this restaurant had very nice vibes and carefully curated menu, albeit a tad pricey.
Overall we were served 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 3 desserts. That's 3 courses out of the 4 we were supposed to receive. The tasting menu posted online on their website confirms that we were supposed to receive a 3rd course of fish and braised short ribs before dessert. I also can't help but feel cheated at seeing the party of two next to us receiving the same two plates for each course despite us being a party of three and paying for three tasting menus. The bill came came out pricey with three $72 tasting menus, of which we seem to have received 7 of the 12 courses. While I have no complaints about the quality of the food we were served, it is impossible for me to recommend this restaurant to anyone due to the food we weren't served.
